Surfers for Autism · Jacksonville Beach

The Whole Beach
Shows Up

Jacksonville Beach · Ten frames from August 8, 2026

01

From the dunes, Surfers for Autism stretches along Jacksonville Beach: tents on the sand, the Atlantic beyond, and a shoreline about to fill.

Surfers for Autism arrived at Jacksonville Beach with boards, surf chairs, volunteers and families. By the time the sessions were underway, the waterline had become a relay—helpers carrying, steadying, pushing, cheering and meeting athletes where each ride ended.

These photographs follow the day from the dunes to the water, through preparation, first contact, whitewater, standing, joy and the people still close when the ride is over.

The frames run in the order the story did.

For the reporting behind the day, read the companion feature and interview with Surfers for Autism CEO Moose Brown.

Part I

The beach

Before the first ride, access and preparation make the water possible.

An athlete sits in a surf chair in the shallow water while three Surfers for Autism volunteers gather around to help.
02

Three volunteers gather around an athlete in a surf chair before the water. Access starts long before the first wave.

Part II

Going in

Nobody enters the shorebreak without someone close enough to reach the board.

Two volunteers steady a blue surfboard as a young athlete wearing ear defenders looks toward the camera in the water.

Part III

The rides

Some rides are loud. Some are concentrated. Every one belongs to the athlete on the board.

An athlete rides through the inside on a surfboard as a smiling coach follows and a volunteer claps from the shallows.

Whitewater rises around the board, but the expression is unmistakable: the ride is pure joy.

Part IV

After

The ride ends. The people around it do not disappear.

A boy wearing swim goggles stands beside his mother, whose hand rests warmly on his shoulder at the Surfers for Autism event.
09

At the edge of the event, a mother’s hand rests on her son’s shoulder. The water is nearby; the connection is closer.

A smiling child sits on a parent's shoulders with Surfers for Autism tents visible behind them on Jacksonville Beach.
